Free, with no account and no time limit
No sign-up, no time limit, and nothing uploaded anywhere. The file is yours and it stays on your machine.
Most recorders described as free want something: an account before you can start, a five-minute cap, a subscription, or an upload to their servers. HappyRec wants none of them.
What you do not have to do
- Create an account or hand over an email address.
- Stop at five or fifteen minutes.
- Upload anything, or trust a server with what is on your screen.
- Pay, now or later. There is no pro tier waiting behind the good features.
Every recording carries a small HappyRec badge in the top-right corner. That is the whole business model — there is no subscription, no pro tier and nothing to buy. If that badge does not suit the video you are making, a paid recorder will suit you better, and we would rather say so here than after you have recorded an hour.
What you get
- Screen, window, area or voice-only capture.
- System audio and microphone together — the thing QuickTime cannot do.
- A camera bubble you can move and resize, for tutorials where your face helps. How it works.
- Pause and resume mid-recording, for when somebody interrupts you.
- Hardware encoding, so a long session does not turn the fan into part of the audio track.
- An MP4 on your disk, small enough to email.
Why the file staying local matters
A hosted recorder uploads as you record. That is the product, and for a marketing demo it is fine. It is not fine when the thing on screen is a client's admin panel, a database with real customer records, or anything covered by an agreement about where data may be stored.
With HappyRec there is no copy anywhere but your disk. Nothing to delete from a server later, and nothing to explain.
The honest limits
- macOS only. There is no Windows or Linux build.
- It is a recorder, not an editor. Trim, captions, transitions and joining clips are a different tool.
- No hosting and no analytics. If you need a link and want to know who watched it, a hosted service is the honest answer and we are not it.
What it costs us to give away
HappyRec is made by Happycoders, a software company in Thoothukudi. It exists because we needed it ourselves and the free options all wanted something. There is no paid tier planned and no data being sold; it is a calling card for the work we do.
