Recording Modes

Choose your mode: Screen, Window, Area, or Voice

HappyRec gives you four ways to capture — three video modes for exactly how much of your display to show, plus an audio-only mode for when you don't need the screen at all.

Screen

Captures your full display at up to 4K, 30 or 60 fps. The straightforward choice for tutorials, demos, and anything where the viewer needs to see the whole picture.

Window

Records a single app window and nothing else — the rest of your desktop, notifications, and other apps stay out of the recording entirely. Useful when you only want to show one piece of software without tidying your whole desktop first.

Area

Drag a resizable frame over exactly the region you want to show, then record just that. Good for zooming in on one part of a busy screen — a single panel, a chart, a form field — without cropping in post.

Voice

No screen at all — just your microphone, recorded straight to M4A or WAV. This is the mode to use for voiceovers, narration you'll lay over other footage later, or quick voice notes.

Every video mode (Screen, Window, Area) can also add a Face Cam bubble, an Avatar, or a Logo overlay burned into the recording — including in Window and Area modes, where a floating overlay window could never normally be captured. See the Avatar guide.

Whichever mode you pick, quality (720p / 1080p / 4K) and frame rate (30 / 60 fps) are set once in Preferences and apply to every recording until you change them. New to HappyRec? Start with the Getting Started guide.
